The Tiger Discretionary Grant Application proposed by the SLVDRG and the San Luis & Rio Grande Railroad (SLRG) involves extensive improvements in the Valley’s rail system and services designed to produce long-term benefits for the Valley. It also provides the economic stimulus impact needed in terms of spending and jobs during the construction phase of the project.
Key features of the SLRG proposal include:
- Upgrades of track infrastructure to permit handling of high-volume freight traffic and speeds up to 60 mph for passenger service.
- A unique rural mobility service connecting the communities of South Fork, Alamosa, and Antonito through a regular, four times daily passenger service operated entirely without subsidy.
- Construction of an Inland port facility south of Antonito which will anchor significant new flows of freight diverted from the highway mode. This will create new jobs for Antonito and opportunities for truck hauls from the site.
- Restoration of freight rail service from Monte Vista to South Fork.
- Narrow gauge track extension from Antonito to Alamosa.
- Restoration of the National Historic Landmark depot in Antonito, and completion of Alamosa’s new Multimodal Transportation Center.
Advantages for new businesses, tourism, and community improvements at various locations along the rail routes. |
